The Chennai Regional Meteorological Centre (CRM) has informed us that as a cyclonic format is due to be formed over the Bay of Bengal, there are prospects for very heavy rains in Tamil Nadu tomorrow and the day after (Thursday, 8th December & Friday, 9th December).
In a notification released in this regard by the Chennai Regional Meteorological Centre, it is mentioned:
"A strong depression zone has developed and has prevailed over the southeast Bay of Bengal and the adjacent south Andaman coastal areas.
This may drift towards the west and northwest and may intensify to a strong depression zone over the southeast Bay of Bengal today (Wednesday, 7th December).
This depression zone is likely to drift further west and northwest on Thursday and Friday (8th & 9th December) towards North Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and the adjacent south Andhra Coastal areas.
As such, there are prospects for mild to medium rain with lightning and thunder in a few places in Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Karaikkal, and the interior Tamil Nadu Districts today (Wednesday, 7th December).
On Thursday (8th December), there are prospects for very heavy rains in a few places in the districts of Villupuram, Chengalpattu, Kanchipuram, Thiruvallur, Chennai, Kallakkurichi, Ariyalur, Perambalur, Mayiladuthurai, Thanjavur, Thiruvallur and Nagappattinam Districts and Pudhuchery and Karaikkal
There are prospects for very heavy rain in a few places in Ranippettai, Kanchipuram, Thiruvannamalai, Kallakkurichi, Perambalur, Ariyalur, Trichy, Thanjavur, Thiruvallur, Pudhukkottai, Sivagangai, and Ramanathapuram Districts.
As regards Friday, 9th December. There are prospects for heavy to very heavy rain in 1 or 2 places in the districts of Thiruvallur, Chennai, Ranippettai, Kanchipuram, Chengalpattu, Thiruvannamalai, Villupuram, Kallakkurichi, Cuddalore, Perambalur, Ariyalur, Thanjavur, Thiruvarur, Nagappattinam, and Mayiladuthurai and Pudhuchery and Karaikkal.
There are prospects for heavy rain in the districts of Vellore, Thirupathur, Krishnagiri, Dharmapuri, Salem, Namakkal, Trichy, Karur, Pudhukkottai, Sivagangai and Ramanathapuram.
As regards Chennai Metro City and its suburbs, the sky will remain somewhat cloudy in the next 48 hours. There are prospects for mild to medium rain with lightning and thunder in a few places.
Warning for fishermen
High-speed winds are likely to blow at 40-45 kmph and intermittently at 55 kmph. As such, fishermen from these are being warned NOT to venture into the sea on the above-mentioned days!"
