Why are the cut off marks for MBBS/BDS courses in TN now making sensational news?

The latest news is that for the open category, the cut off marks for MBBS/BDS courses in TamilNadu might come down by 5 marks and for other categories it might come down up to 15 marks. This has caught the attention of many now. The reason for that is the number of top scorers in NEET 2022 has reduced when compared to the numbers in NEET 2021. On Monday, 17th October 2022, Mr. M. Subramanian, health minister released the cut off marks.

In 2022, 5 students have scored more than 700 marks out of total 720 marks and in 2021 9 students scored more than 700 marks. When compared to 239 students in 2021 who have scored above 650 plus, there are just 199 students now with 650 plus scores. More than 600 marks were scored by 1030 students in 2021 and in 2022 only 953 students scored more than 600 marks.

In NEET 2022, as manya s 4470 students have scored above 500 marks and in 2021 5284 students have scored above 500 marks. Mr. Manickavel Arumugam,  who has been guiding and counselling  many aspirants explained that the overall performance has come down now in NEET 2022. This would result in the drop in the cut off marks for open category. It is now predicted that for open category the cut off marks might be 580 that is 4 marks below the 2021 cut offs. The cut off marks for BC category would come down by 8 marks now.

The shocking piece of information is that in 2022 only few students would be able to get admission in the central universities in India for MBBS/BDS under All India quota. The reason for this is mainly because the overall performance of TN students have come down but the overall performances of students across India have improved.
