Anna University or AU in Chennai has now taken an important decision that has made the parents of almost 40000 vocational stream students feel delighted.

It must be noted that AU announced the entry of these 40000 vocational stream students into the engineering courses in its 17 constituent colleges in TN. These students are studying textile technology, civil, electrical/ electronic and mechanical engineering subjects in their class12. This was according to Mr. S.N. Janardhanan, state president of TN Vocational Teachers Kazhagam.

It must be noted that these 40000 students have been admitted to various engineering colleges in Tamil Nadu and AU alone has been holding out on the ground mentioning that they would not succeed in their engineering studies.

Many students who have completed these vocational courses in their class 12 earlier became self employed and those who studied textile technology in class12 got jobs in various textile majors in various capacities. According to Mr. B. Seraman, state treasurer of Kazhagam, it was clear that the fight has been going on for decades to allow these vocation stream students to enter Anna University and its 17 constituent colleges. It was based on the fact that these students have been permitted to AU affiliated private engineering colleges.

Mr. N. Ravi, associations state general secretary expressed his thoughts. He spoke about how there have been many representations till now regarding this issue and how they have totally failed. He explained that the higher education minister Mr. Ponmudy was convinced by their arguments and allowed them to enter into the engineering courses of AU and its 17 constituent colleges.

Mr. S.N. Janardhanan mentioned that these vocational stream students have also studied mathematics in their class 12 and that not studying subjects like physics and chemistry would not affect their scholarships. It is well known that these subjects were not compulsory for engineering studies. Two percent of the seats have been reserved for the vocational subject students in AU now. The need to include vocational subjects in all the 4000 government schools in Tamil Nadu has been emphasized by the TN Vocational Teachers Kazhagam.
