Heavy rains during the months of November 2021 made the lives of the residents belonging to T. Nagar very difficult. Rain water entered many households in this important locality in south Chennai and many people were shifted to other places also. Now, these residents want GCC to de-silt the storm water drains of SWD crisscrossing the shopping hub of Chennai before the monsoon season.

In this regard, the T. Nagar Welfare Association has sent a petition to Mr. Gagandeep Singh Bedi, GCC Commissioner. In the petition, the sufferings faced by the residents belonging to T. Nagar during the flooding in November 2021 were mentioned. The association has urged GCC Commissioner to carry out the much needed de-silting of SWD in the streets belonging to T. Nagar plus carry out repair works wherever it was needed to avoid flooding once again. It also brought out that these de-silting works must be carried out earlier itself and not just before the onset of monsoon.

It must not be forgotten that most parts of this important shopping hub of Chennai was under floods during the month of November. The failure of the SWD network here came to light during the monsoon season last year. This was due to poor de-silting and poor planning of the drains.

Many violations by the commercial establishments in this locality have not been checked and this was the reason behind the SWD filled up with sewage. This was as per a resident belonging to T. Nagar. It must be noted that during the non-rainy season water flows in the drains. It is noteworthy that the de-silting of SWD in several places belonging to Chennai is being carried out by the civic body now.  Under the TN Urban Employment Scheme, at a cost of Rs 60 lakhs, de-silting works are going in Tondiarpet and in Thiru VI - Ka Nagar.
