More than 60 years old, the famous Mahatma Gandhi statue located at the Marina Beach is making sensational news now!!

This statue has been a major landmark in Chennai for so many years. The news that has emerged out now is that CMRL would be shifting this important statue temporarily as it has started to construct an underground metro station near the LightHouse. It is revealed that the Mahatma Gandhi statue would be shifted to Ripon Buildings.

To avoid damages to this important statue, CMRL has taken the decision to shift the statue to another place. Truth is that this statue is more than 60 years old and enough care is being taken now to preserve the statue of the greatest leader in Indian history. This stature would be kept at the entrance of Ripon buildings in Chennai.

The statue would be transferred back to its original location at the Marina Beach once the construction of the underground metro station works gets completed. This was mentioned by an officer belonging to the Chennai Corporation.

Under the phase-2 project CMRL has decided to construct metro lines between Light house and Poonamallee. It is noteworthy that the underground metro station at light House would be a shallow station and it would avoid damage to the marine ecosystem.

It was in the year 1959 this12 feet tall Mahatma Gandhi statue made of bronze was unveiled by the then PM of India Mr. Jawaharlal Nehru. At that time, the CM of Tamil Nadu was Mr. K. Kamaraj.
