Govt. raids illegal eateries, but action ineffective

Posted on: 19/Jul/2013 10:34:22 AM
On Thursday morning, officials from the Chennai Corporation conducted a raid of illegal eateries in the Lily Pond Complex. These eateries sell food, on the side of the road, that is infested with disease. But a couple of hours later, the eateries were back.

The councilor of the ward and the areas junior engineer said that they were not aware that a raid had taken place. However, police officials confirmed the action.

The turnover of shops inside the complex is low. But the illegal eateries outside do a roaring business. The eateries operate until midnight. Many passengers, who arrive at the railway station from other States, are fleeced by the shopkeepers. They get beaten up if they refuse to pay the exorbitant amounts charged at these eateries. The shopkeepers lure pedestrians with claims of selling a plate of biryani for Rs. 70. Once the customer has eaten, they demand Rs. 140, said a resident who is homeless.
