Posted on: 05/Jan/2022 9:55:45 AM
From the academic year 2017-18 onwards, board or public examinations were introduced for the students belonging to class11 in the state of Tamil Nadu. The students as well as parents of these students have been facing severe stress due to the public exams are known.

The news that has come out now is that the government of TN is likely to scrap the board exams for class 11 students. It was mentioned by a senior officer belonging to the school education department that the students of class11 were under severe stress for having to appear for the board exams continuously for the 3 years from class 10 onwards.

He threw light on the reason for introducing board exams for class11 students and said that many private schools did not concentrate on the class 11 syllabus but they were teaching class 12 subjects in class 11itself to improve their results. It must be taken into account that the class 11 students who were appearing for the board exams did not have the time to prepare for competitive examinations.

The senior officer then spoke about how the decision on cancellation of class11 board exams is yet to be finalized. With the new syllabus, more than 7lakhs class11 students had appeared for the board exams in 2018-19 and total marks were reduced from 1200 to 600. An internal assessment of 10 marks was introduced also. The board exams for class11 students could not be conducted in 2020 due to the Coronavirus pandemic are known. It is true that marks scored in class11 are not considered during the admissions for higher education.

Mr. P.K. Illamaran, president of TN Teachers association was against the cancellation of board exams for class11. He was of the view that if the board examination for class11 gets canceled then it could once again make many schools to teach class 12 subjects in class11 itself for the sake of improving their  results. Mr. K.R. Nandakumar, general secretary, TN Private Nursery Primary Matriculation Higher Secondary Schools mentioned that cancellation of class 11 board exams would make the learning approach of the class11 students very casual.
