Medical college students on silent protest

Posted on: 17/Jul/2013 11:33:25 AM
Students of government medical colleges in the city are on silent protest by wearing black badges. They claim that they are made to do the work of nurses and other paramedical staff. These students are mostly house surgeons that are undergoing the Compulsory Rotatory Residential Internship (CRRI).

‘Every week we have admission day in hospitals, and on that day, we work continuously for 36 hours. We do the work of nurses and lab technicians. We collect blood samples, take trays to the blood bank, administer drugs and distribute dresses to patients… We have to learn investigation and examine the patients, but we do not get the time to do our work… Why should we do the work of nurses and other staff? This doesn’t happen in medical colleges in other states. At the end of one year, we are not equipped to do our own work. We end up working continuously with little or no sleep and we are not given our week off’, say the students..
