The University of Madras or Madras University or MU has been facing a financial crisis now. The news that has come out now is that to overcome this financial crisis the MU has planned to revise the fee structure of the students from the next academic year. It is learnt that the academic fees would not be increased and the increase would be nominal only.

At present, MU has been examining the fees that could be hiked and this was pointed out by some sources. A senior official belonging to MU expressed his thoughts. He spoke about how the fees of MU were lowest in entire India and how the fees must be hiked. In the past, there were many protests whenever MU planned to hike the fees. He concluded that the hike in the fees was the need of the hour.

Even if the fees are increased, it would be nominal only. This was according to the vice-chancellor of Madras University, S. Gowri. She spoke about how the students would not get affected by the increase in the fees and how both tuition as well as exam fees would remain unchanged.

Factors like mismanagement and inadequate financial support from the TN government were responsible for MU to face a financial crisis. This was pointed out by the recent Controller and Auditor General or CAG of India compliance Audit Report. It was brought to light by a CAG report that the funds meant for the purpose of R & D were diverted to salaries and regular non-plan expenditure.

While the revenue of MU got reduced, the expenses became more. This was as per some university sources. It must be taken into account that the deficit was mainly due to the increased financial burden after implementing Seventh Pay Commission scales of pay for teaching and non-teaching staff , pensioners etc.
