To assist with the healthcare services at various government hospitals in Tamil Nadu, the state health department had signed a MoU or memorandum of understanding with voluntary organisations SCARF, SNEHA, Cankids etc. By this, elderly care, childhood cancer treatment and suicides etc would be given importance. It must be noted that these organisations would help with medical services at various government hospitals in association with the National Welfare Board. Established in 1984, SCARF or Schizophrenia Research Foundation has been providing care to those with mental disorders etc.

For providing mental health services to the senior citizens, SCARF would be providing adequate training for the doctors for the sake of skills development training. It is important to note that elderly psychiatry through capacity building for all medical practitioners at medical college hospitals, district HQ hospitals and PHCs would be given. Around 10.4% of the population belonging to Tamil Nadu is above the age of 60. The elders suffer from dementia issues. There is a greater necessity to provide separate treatment for the elderly persons in a situation where stress, forgetfulness and mental health issues are increasing.

It must be taken into note that every year 703000 persons die by suicide. In Tamil Nadu, every year 16000 suicides occur and the suicide rate has increased in the last 3 years from 18persons per lakh in 2018 to 22persons per lakhs in 2020. Hence on Friday, a MOU was signed with SNEHA. It is known that SNEHA is an organisation working towards suicide prevention. This organisation has been providing unconditional emotional support to various depressed, desperate and suicidal persons.
