Panaiyur residents submit petition against power project

Residents of Panaiyur Periyakuppam approached the Southern Bench along with a petition against the proposal to establish a coal jetty and conveyor belt in their hamlet. The Bench consists of Judicial Member Justice P Jyothimani and Expert Member Professor R Nagendran, Marimuthu and Mathikarasu.
The Cheyyur Ultra Mega Power Project in Kanchipuram is expecting an ok from the Ministry of Environment and Forest (MoEF). The Ministry had given clearance for the coal jetty and conveyor belt last November. However, residents of Panaiyur feel that this may affect their livelihood which is fishing. It will also affect the marine ecology in the area, leading to bigger problems.
