As part of the Union Shipping Ministry’s plan to give a facelift to lighthouses across the country, Union Minister for Shopping Milind Deora has given an in principle clearance to fund a project in Mammallapuram that will take the old lighthouse there and make it an exhibit in an upcoming museum.

The old lighthouse was installed in 1887 when an oil lamp and red chimney were brought here from Santapille in Andhra Pradesh. The rear mirror behind the lamp showed light to mariners 10 nautical miles away and used for more than a decade.

However, it was changed soon after. ‘The British chose to have a pucca light house in the temple town as they wanted to warn mariners from getting caught by Portuguese in Pondicherry and Dutch in Pulicat’, says light house enthusiast D.H. Rao.
