Are you studying a second year B.E mechanical engineering course and want to pursue a chemical engineering course, here comes a sensational piece of news!!

There were several requests made by the engineering students to AICTE regarding shifting from one engineering branch to another branch in the four year engineering course. Their efforts have borne fruits now.

On Monday, 16th August, AICTE gave permission to the B.E and B. Tech students to join other branches of engineering through lateral entry from this academic year onwards.

It must be noted that the proposal was placed before the AICTE executive committee in a recently held meeting. It was mentioned in a notice from AICTE that the panel suggested that the technical universities can facilitate such requests by allowing them to get admitted to an appropriate level of B. Tech programme in other engineering branches.

By lateral entry scheme, a student who is studying mechanical engineering second year can now shift to chemical engineering or civil engineering from the third year onwards. It is important to mention that the committee approved the exemption from pursuing courses that are already completed in the first discipline. Point is that these students would be guided to complete other requirements of their second discipline. The shifting from one branch of engineering to another branch comes with many practical issues and for that the students would have to get admitted to an institution as regular students. Transfer would be ensured by the concerned university and necessary provisions would be made in their statues accordingly.
