New MTC buses ordered

Chennai�s MTC (Metropolitan Transport Corporation) will be ordering new buses from private commercial vehicles companies such as Ashok Leyland. Reports say that the MTC has ordered 2610 buses.
�Every year, the government purchases around 3,000 buses to expand the fleet, It`s too early to say which corporation will get how many buses�, said an MTC official.
However, there have been many complaints about bad maintenance of the existing fleet. �There is a severe shortage of technical staff. While a ratio of 1.25 staff to each bus is to be maintained, the ratio is now only 0.68. Spare parts are also not bought regularly�, said M. Chandran, State Transport Employee Union CITU President.
