Constructed in the year 1879, Korattur check dam having a regulator was damaged in the 2015 floods and this dam is nearing completion now!!

This would be bolstering the water storage at the Chembarambakkam reservoir. It is well known that Chembarambakkam reservoir has been one of the major water sources for the people of Chennai.

It is learnt that 80% of the reconstruction of British- era Korattur check dam across the clean stretch of Cooum in Tiruvallur district has been completed.

The design of the Korattur check dam was such that it would discharge 30000 cusecs of flood water. This has been pointed out by some officials belonging to WRD. There was a heavy flow in the river 6 years back is known. Truth is that 10 million cubic feet of water could be stored by a 4m tall structure across the river. It is important to note that the structure would retain flow in the river for 3km upstream for an additional 3 months after the monsoons.

By this, recharging the groundwater plus meeting the drinking water and irrigation requirements of the neighbouring villages could be met easily. Point is that the groundwater percolation would be effective in the locality due to the sandy layer of 30 feet depth. Renovation work has been going on in the off-take regulator with 12 shutters and by this it would be possible to transfer surplus water from the river to the Chembarambakkam reservoir. Information is that around 3600 cusecs of water could be released through the regulator.
