Old Meenambakkam airport to be brought down

The Meenambakkam Airport is set to be razed down. The decision has been taken by the Airports Authority of India (AAI) which has been unable to maintain the buildings. The airport was shifted from here to the current location in 1985 by the then Chief Minister M. G. Ramachandran.
�There is a shortage of parking space for freighter aircraft. So, we are planning to raze the dilapidated old terminal and a few other buildings to construct a freighter bay� The proposal present in the master plan would take some time to materialise as buildings belonging to a few stakeholders, like Air India and the postal department, needed to be re-located�, said V.P. Agrawal, Chairman of AAI.
