More sections in arts and science colleges

Tamil Nadu Higher Education Minister P. Palaniappan has said that there will be more seats available to students who apply for arts and science colleges. A study has shown that students this year prefer these colleges to professional ones as there are better career prospects after getting arts or science degrees.
�Students look at arts and science courses more rather than engineering this year. As we have more demand for arts and science courses, the state government has decided to start 798 new sections in government and aided colleges this year� The state government has opened 51 new colleges in the past three years. With the increase in number of colleges, our gross enrolment ratio (GER) has gone up from 18 to 19 per cent, whereas the national GER has been stagnant at 15 per cent�, said Mr. Palaniappan.
