Vegetable prices have shot up abnormally in Chennai now

Posted on: 12/Apr/2021 9:21:41 AM
At the Koyambedu market, the vegetable wholesale prices have increased abnormally now.

It is said that the prices of few other vegetables would also increase soon. The supply of veggies to the market has increased due to the second crop but the vendors have been demanding relaxations on the present restrictions. There is a dip in the supply but wholesale prices of vegetables have increased by 20 to 30percent.

Earlier 420 to 430 trucks used to supply vegetables to the Koyambedu market but now this has reduced to 360 to 370. The reason for that was due to the second crop and the prices would increase in the next week. This was as per Mr. P. Sukumaran, treasurer of Koyambedu Vegetable Merchants Association. From Rs 30 per kg last week, the prices have gone up to Rs 40 per kg, and from Rs 30 per kg, the prices of carrots have gone up to Ra 35 per kilogram. Point is that the prices of broad beans and beetroots have gone up to Rs 30 per kg from Rs 25 per kg. From Rs 25 per kg, the prices of cucumbers have shot up to Rs 30 per kg now.

Over the next week the prices of vegetables like tomatoes, onions and potatoes etc would remain stable. They would be priced at Rs 25 to Rs 30 per kg. With tomatoes seeing the highest increase, the prices are expected to increase in the next week of time. Truth is that the vendors have been facing issues due to the restrictions imposed now.
