The hike in the fuel prices has been creating issues for many now and people are finding it hard to cope- up with the increased rates. The hike in the prices of diesel has made the lorry owners to increase their charges also.

It is now revealed that the prices of essential commodities would go up as the lorry owners have increased their charges. From the midnight of Wednesday, the charges of lorry’s and small goods vehicles have increased due to hike in the fuel rates.  This was as per Mr. B. Venkataswamy, treasurer of TN Lorry Owner’s Federation. He hinted that the decision to increase the charges was taken at the meeting at Chennai on Wednesday.

It is learnt that the federation had urged the TN government to bring diesel under the purview of GST. It was later demanded by the federation that the government must extend the life of the vehicles from 15 years to 20 years before they get scrapped. Inspite of having enough balance in their FASTag counts, the drivers of lorry’s would have to pay twice the charge at the toll gates and it was due to technical snag in FASTag. Point is that the charges are debited after leaving the toll plaza.

It is important to mention here that the federation has got more than 10lakh lorry’s, mini lorry’s and small load autos etc in TN as members. To discuss the hike in the diesel prices plus for taking the next course of action, the office bearers belonging to South India Motor Transport Association or SIMTA would be coming together for a meeting in Bengaluru on 9th March. According to Mr. Yuvraj belonging to SIMTA, lorry owners who are part of SMITA have not increased the charges and the final decision would be taken at the meeting.
