Last telegram on July 15th

Posted on: 13/Jun/2013 2:50:07 PM
It’s the end of an era. The last telegram will be sent by the Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) on July 15th.

‘Patronage has come down drastically in recent years following the popularity of mobile phones, email, chat and instant messaging. Very few telegrams are sent from the Chennai centre or across the country. With the advent of cellphones, email and instant messaging, patronage for the telegram declined. But,there is one class of citizens that continues to depend on telegrams — politicians. Politicians send mass telegrams to the Prime Minister or chief minister on urgent public issues. Such occasions used to be bumper days for us. On all other days, only employees of private or public organisations use the service to extend leave or send communication to their department and keep a copy as record. Modern gadgets dealt a blow to the telegraph. From a separate department, telegraph became a separate wing, and then a part of customer service’, said a BSNL official.
