The Chennai Corporation has proposed to hand over smart phones to officials ward level conservancy inspectors and engineers. The move is to ensure accountability in the institution.
�(We) will provide smartphones to civic staff to take pictures of garbage bins, roads, encroachments on footpaths and building violations. The budget for the project is yet to be decided� The phones will be used to monitor garbage collection. They can also be used to check encroachments and illegal construction in the future� We can follow up on complaints from the public by checking the pictures taken by field-level officials. It will help us track civic work more effectively. The pictures will contain the time and date of the shot� We have asked NIC (National Informatics Centre) to develop an exclusive mobile application for us�, said Vikram Kapur, Corporation Commissioner.
