Saidapet Stations concrete diaphragm has been bored through by the tunnel boring machine (TBM). The machine has made a tunnel of 250 metres in the seven km stretch between Saidapet and Government Estate.
The diaphragm wall, usually built on the four sides of the station and within which the station is constructed, is about one metre thick, We are drilling at a speed of about 10-12 metres a day; but this may change and slow down if the soil condition is not favourable. In the tunnelling done so far, there has not been a single crack in the neighbouring buildings owing to the metro work, said a Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) official.
