Just a few days back, Greater Chennai Corporation or GCC had announced that it would be collecting fees for the removal of the garbage from the residents and commercial establishments. Now, GCC has rolled back on its decision and has scrapped this fee for the time being.
Representations received by GCC:
Truth is that GCC has been receiving many representations from the citizen groups, traders and public requesting not to charge a fee for the garbage removal. Hence, the decision not to collect a fee for garbage removal was taken by the GCC. This was according to an official release from the GCC.
The release mentioned that the roll back was announced after the CM of TN Mr. E. Palaniswami gave instructions.
On Tuesday, 22nd December, the civic body caught the attention of many when it announced that user fees would be collected based on the Centre Solid Waste Management Rules 2019 from 1st of January 2021. It was also said that the user fee would be collected along with the property tax.
It was brought to light by Mr. G. Prakash, Chennai Corporation commissioner that residents, commercial establishments and resident welfare associations have requested the civic body to withhold the order. He added that based on the instructions given by the chief minister of TN the civic body would withhold the order.
Collection of user fee based on size and usage of buildings:
It must be taken into account that the GCC wanted to collect user fees based on the size and usage of the buildings. It must be recalled that the civic body mentioned that those residential buildings with built up area of 500 sq ft must pay a user fee of Rs 10 per month. For built up area from 501 sq ft to 1200 sq ft- user fee was Rs 25 per month etc.
