To put an end to marking the attendance by proxy in the government schools in TN, the state government has begun distributing smart cards for the teachers.

The distribution of smart cards for all the teachers in the government schools in TN got stalled in March due to the Coronavirus pandemic. As per a senior officer belonging to the school education department, smart cards would be compulsory for all the teachers working in the government as well as government aided schools in TN. This would be applicable when the teachers are on duty.

He explained that the department has been distributing smart cards and it would get finished by 31st December. Nearly 3 lakh teachers would get these smart cards. An amount of Rs 1.17 crores has been spent for this purpose of smart cards for the teachers.

New attendance system using scanners:
Once when the distribution of smart cards gets over then the new attendance system using scanners for screening the cards would be installed at all the schools in TN. The teachers would have to validate their fingerprints once when the smart ID card is placed on to the attendance system. This was brought out by an official. To authenticate the user, the system would verify and match with the stored data.

Installation of Radio Frequency Identification or RFI scanner:
In addition to these smart card scanners, the government schools would also have RFI scanners and these would be present at the entry and exit points in the schools.
