It is now clear that the flower market at Koyambedu in Chennai would be reopened on 14th of December after a period of nearly 7 months. Information is that this would be the last section of shops that have been waiting to be reopened in the market complex.

It must be recalled that the Koyambedu market was closed in May after it became as Covid-19 cluster. From a four acre site in Vanagaram, the flower market functioned. It is known that there were no amenities at Vanagaram. For many months, flower business was done from other places in Chennai. Soon, about 600 shops that have been functioning at various places would be shifted to Koyambedu.

On Wednesday, a meeting took place between the members of TN Vanigar Sangangalin Paeramaippu and federation of All Traders Association of Koyambedu Wholesale Market Complex and with the CMDA authority member secretary Mr. Shunchonngam Jatak Chiru. There were talks about the reopening of the flower market at the meeting.

It has been brought to light by some merchants that various sections of the market have been reopened in 4 phases till now. The market has been receiving 40000 to 50000 retailers every day now and the customers are not allowed at the market premises. On 29th November, the remaining semi wholesalers reopened 700 shops and as a result the prices of most vegetables have stabilised now. This was as per some vegetable wholesalers.

After the semi wholesalers shifted to Koyambedu, the wholesale business has picked up by 20% to 30%. This was according to Mr. S. Chandran, Koyambedu Periyar Wholesale Market Licensed Merchants Association. He pointed out that since the 90% encroachments were controlled the crowds at the market were managed. He shed light on the periodical checks that were conducted by the authorities of the market management committee.
