Cyclone format intensifies Prospects for heavy rains from tomorrow!

The low-pressure format which prevailed over the South Andaman and the adjacent southeast Bay of Bengal, first intensified into a depression zone and later transformed into a cyclone on Sunday (29th November).

Chennai Regional Meteorological Centre has informed that there are prospects for mild rains in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry from Tuesday (1st December) to Thursday (3rd December) for 3 days and there are prospects for very heavy rains in South Tamil Nadu.

In this regard, the Director of the Chennai Regional Meteorological Centre, S. Balachandran, informed on Sunday (29th November):

A new low-pressure zone was formed on Saturday (28th November) and was prevailing. This transformed into a depression zone on Sunday (29th November). It further intensified on Sunday to be a strong depression zone.

This depression zone will drift towards west/northwest and will transform into a severe depression zone on Monday night or Tuesday morning.   It will drift towards the southern Tamil Nadu coastal area on 2nd December. Due to this, there are prospects for mild rains in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry from 1st December to 3rd December for 3 days and there are prospects for heavy rains in south Tamil Nadu.

There are prospects for mild rain in 1 or 2 places in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry today (Monday, 30th November)."

1st December: 
There are prospects for heavy rains with thunder in the districts of Kanyakumari, Thirunelveli, and Thoothukkudi on Tuesday (1st December). There are prospects for mild rain in a few places in the other coastal districts and parts of Puducherry.

2nd December: 
There are prospects for very heavy rains in the districts of Kanyakumari, Thirunelveli, Thoothukkudi, and Ramanathapuram, and Thenkasi. There are prospects for heavy to very heavy rains in 1 or 2 places in the districts of Theni, |Madurai, Sivagangai, and Pudhukkottai.

There are prospects for heavy rains with thunder in 1 or 2 places in the delta districts and Karaikkal, Thiruvallur, Kanchipuram, and Chingleput districts and in a few places in other districts, there are prospects for mid to medium rains.

3rd December:
There are prospects for heavy to very heavy rains with thunder in  1 or 2 places in the districts of Kanyakumari, Thirunelveli, Thoothukkudi, Theni, and Virudhunagar on 3rd December. There are prospects for mild rains in the other coastal districts and Puducherry and Karaikkal.

There are prospects for mild to medium rains in a few places  in thehe other interior districts.

Rainfall:
As at 8.30 AM on Sunday (29th November) in the last 24 hours, a maximum rainfall of 40 mm has been recorded in Thammampatti, Salem District. Rainfall recorded in other places in mm: Polur, Thiruvannamalai District, Ilaiyankudi, Sivagangai District, and Pudhuchathiram, Nagappattinam District: 30 each.

Warning for fishermen:
High-speed winds are likely to blow at 60 kmph to 70 kmph and intermittently at 80 kmph in the central part of the South Bay of Bengal, southwest Bay of Bengal, and Bay of Mannar, Kanyakumari Ocean area, Tamil Nadu coastal areas,, So, it has been alerted that fishermen in these areas MUST NOT VENTURE INTO THE SEA UNTIL 2ND DECEMBER. Further, fishermen must not venture into the sea for fishing in the southeast |Arabian Sea, Kerala coastal areas, and Lakhdiv Maldives, Kerala coastal areas, and Lakhdiv on 3rd December.
