Now, 70 percent reduction in the vegetables sales at the Koyambedu market

On the day when Cyclone Nivar made its landfall, the sales of the vegetables dropped by 70% in the Koyambedu wholesale market in Chennai. The business hasn’t yet returned back to the normal even now and the vegetables vendors are disappointed.
The vendors were of the view that the heavy rains in TN have been responsible for the reduction in the vegetable supply. The prices of the vegetable have increased by about 10%.
Koyambedu market is well equipped to deal with the rains and strong winds and inspite of these a lot of buyers have been hesitant to come to the market. Information collected is that a large portion of vegetable and fruit cart vendors did not come as they would not be able to do business due to heavy rains.
According to Mr. P. Sukumaran, treasurer of Koyambedu Vegetable Merchants Association, there has been an average loss of 70percent of sales in the last 2 days due to the absence of the vendors.
It was brought to light by some vendors that the rains have led to an increase in the prices of some vegetables by about10%. Information is that the prices of vegetables like brinjal, beans and broad beans have increased to Rs 50 per kg and tomatoes are at Rs 40 per kg now. In the market, the potatoes are available at Rs 60 per kg and onions would increase to Rs 65 per kg.
There might be further issues in the sales and prices of the vegetables and that would be due to the upcoming cyclone and plus due to the impact of Cyclone Nivar in AP/Telangana. This was according to some wholesale vendors at the Koyambedu market.
It was later mentioned by a tomato vendor that there might also be another dip in the business activities if the second depression became a cyclone again.
