This piece of news would take many by surprise!!

When the new time table gets released, Southern Railways or SR would be converting 36 passenger trains into express services with less number of stops. This would be done most probably in the month of December.

It must be noted that the passenger services are slow, popular and cheaper and they linked smaller towns with cities. It is brought out that when the normalcy resumes after the lifting of Covid-19 restrictions the passenger train services would be lesser. The Railway Board on Tuesday, 21st October 2020 approved the list of trains suggested by the zone.

Various trains are Arakkonam-Salem, Puducherry-Tirupati, Villupuram-Tirupathi, Trichy-Rameswaram, Erode-Tirunelveli,Madurai-Villupuram,Mayiladuthurai-Dindigul, Nagercoil-Coimbatore,Coimbatore-Nagercoil, Erode-Tirunelveli, Tirunelveli-Erode passenger trains.

It is said that these trains would not stop in several small stations in between and the people would have to shift to buses for their destinations. Information is that the minimum fare in the passenger trains is Rs 10 and for express trains is Rs 30.

Truth is that the southern railway is among the top 3 zones that would be scraping most number of passenger trains. It must be recalled that in June the railway board had asked each zone to send a list of trains.

It was pointed out by an official belonging to railways that the trains were identified based on the railway board move to convert passenger trains that connected destinations 200km away into express trains by removing uneconomical stops.

He then threw light on how some of the trains were too slow and they ran the whole night or day. Information is that the final decision about the stops that would be removed would be taken later. Southern railways with its headquarters in Chennai is one of the 18 zones belonging to Indian railways and was created in 1951 is well known.
