Pre-monsoon rains in Chennai

Posted on: 17/Oct/2020 9:21:46 AM
The weathermen have revealed that the city of Chennai might get moderate showers with thunder and lightning for the next 2 days. Point is that for the onset of NE monsoons, the weather conditions might not be favourable now but Chennai might get pre-monsoon rains.

The reason for the showers could be due to an atmospheric circulation. Information collected is that due to the convergence of opposite winds Chennai city and north TN might continue to get rains till 28th October.

There would be light to moderate rains or thunder showers for the next 24 hours in several northern districts like Kancheepuram, Tiruvallur, Villupuram, Chengalpet, Kallalurichi, Cuddalore, Vellore, Ranipet. Tiruvannamalai, coastal district of Nagapattinam plus eastern districts like Dharmapuri, Krishnagiri and Salem. This was according to Mr. N. Puviarasan, director, Area Cyclone Warning Centre, IMD.

Upper air circulation and convective activity has been cited as the reasons for the rains in the above said places.

Till 20th October, there might be light to moderate rains or thunder showers at isolated or at few places over north TN. This was as per the 5- day weather prediction by the agency. Mr. Puviarasan spoke about  how Chennai and its suburbs would receive light to moderate rains or thunder showers in the next 48 hours. Maximum temperature and minimum temperature are likely to be around 36 degrees Celsius and 27 degree Celsius.

A low pressure is likely to form over east- central Bay of Bengal and adjoining Andaman Sea on 19th October. It would become more marked in the subsequent 24 hours over the central Bay of Bengal.

The low pressure is likely to move west northwest direction towards Andhra coast. This was brought out by the regional weather inference of IMD.  It has been mentioned by few weather enthusiasts that the low pressure might be weak and elongated over a large region might move towards AP and bring rains for north TN including Chennai till 20th October.

Popular weather blogger, Mr. Pradeep John was of the view that westerly trough or an elongated area of low atmospheric pressure in the westerlies is also likely to develop. This could lead to rainfall all along the east coast.
