National Institute of Ocean Technology or NIOT, Pallikaranai Chennai is now grabbing the attention of many. Soon, the premises of NIOT would be home to Chennai citys second weather radar.

By this state-of-art indigenous weather radar, it would be possible for the people to know about the severity of the weather events plus it would play a huge role in the surveillance.

The NE monsoon season is approaching fast and to strengthen its weather predictions, the meteorological department is gearing up with more additions.

On Wednesday, 23rd September 2020, the foundation stone for the dual polarised solid state X-Band weather radar was laid. This weather radar would be able to capture the weather events that would take place within the radius of 80 to 100km in all directions. This was hinted by the officials belonging to the meteorological department.

It is worthy to note that detailed information about the cloud structures, rainfall intensity and wind variations would be known by the second weather radar.  By this, it would be possible to detect the cyclonic storms approaching the region.

By early November, the weather radar would be installed at NIOT and there would be increased spatial coverage of the observation network. Accurate weather predictions would be possible.

Forecasts on urban flooding would be provided by this weather radar and this was according to Mr. Balachandran, deputy director general of meteorology. Indian Space Research Organisation or ISRO has provided technical design for this second weather radar and under the Make in India programme this was manufactured by Data Patterns Ltd.

Mr. Balachandran later spoke about how the new compact instrument would be able to transmit data every 6 minutes. Information is the S-band doppler weather radar on Rajaji Salai has been functioning and due to ageing it is used for limited purposes only.
