Living in north Chennai is not easy now when compared to living in south and central Chennai. Ask any north Chennai resident and they would tell you this.

In the north Chennai, the enforcement if Covid-19 rules including imposing penalties for not following social distancing, moving without wearing facemasks and spitting in the public places is more vigorous than south or central Chennai. This has been brought to light by the data from Greater Chennai Corporation or GCC.

Till Monday, an amount of Rs 2 crores as fines has been collected from the violators and 50 percent was from the residents and shopkeepers belonging to places like Thiruvottriyur, Manali, Madhavaram, Tondiarpet and Royapuram etc.

The surprising piece of information is that an amount of Rs 44lakhs was collected from Royapuram alone. Central Chennai accounted for 32% of the total fine amount collected and 12% fine amount was collected from south Chennai. The remaining fine amount was collected across the Chennai city by the tahsildars.

Sowcarpet and Georgetown in the north Chennai are 2 places with markets and residential neighbourhoods with huge crowds. The truth is fine amount collected in Royapuram is highest in wards like Sowcarpet (57) and Georgetown (59). This was according to some sources in the Chennai Corporation.

The violations were higher in north Chennai. The awareness amongst people was also less as north Chennai was under developed when compared to south and central Chennai. This was mentioned by Mr. P. Akash, corporation regional deputy commissioner (north).

Fact is three teams were formed at the ward level drawn from the health, engineering and revenue departments. This has been confirmed by the zonal level officials.

It was pointed out by a zonal level officer belonging to central Chennai that daily targets to collect amounts Rs 2000 to Rs 5000 was given to the 3 teams.
