After a long gap of 4 months, Koyambedu foodgrains market would be reopened today. It is now said that this reopening would bring the hustle and bustle back once again here. The traders have been gearing up for this reopening of the Koyambedu food grains market.

On Thursday, shops were allowed to open for the sake of cleaning work and for clearing the old stock. In the anticipation of business here, some traders were seen carrying out last minute small renovation works in their shops.

As per a food grain trader, there was a lot of struggle in the lockdown period. He spoke about how in the beginning the traders were not allowed to even transfer their wares and there was absolutely no business.

Later, the traders were allowed to take out some of the commodities by the officials after getting permission from the concerned authorities. He concluded that the business loss was enormous.

According to Mr. Vikramaraja, TN Vanigar Sangangalin Peramaippu state president, the traders were happy about the reopening of the Koyambedu food grains market but the timings are an issue. It is common knowledge that the market has been allowed to function from 9am to 6pm.

He explained about how the traders want the shop function timings to begin from 3am instead of 9am in the morning. The vegetable market in Koyambedu would begin its operations on 28th September.

The food grains traders were of the opinion that opening their shops at 3 am would make it easy for the vendors to buy both vegetables as well as food grains at a stretch. By this, the business would be boosted.

It must be noted that the traders have been opposing clamping on the two wheelers which are now banned once the market starts functioning. Truth is that the officers have allowed just 4 wheelers only. Mr. Vikramraja had assured that this issue would be taken up with the officials soon.

On Friday, the officials belonging to CMDA along with the member secretary would be making their presence felt in the Koyambedu market. The traders would be raising their issues at that time.
