Prospects of medium rain in northern coastal districts in Tamil Nadu

The Chennai Regional Meteorological Center has informed that there are prospects for medium rain in 1 or 2 places in the northern coastal districts and in the districts lying adjacent to the Western Ghat Range of mountains due to the change in the direction of the monsoon seasonal wind-flow direction and speed which has occurred in the atmosphere.

An official from the Chennai Meteorological Center shared in this regard:

“Due to the change in the monsoon seasonal wind-flaw direction and speed, there are prospects for mild to medium rain in 1 or 2 places in the northern coastal districts of Tamil Nadu and the districts adjacent to the Western Ghat Mountain Range and the districts of Salem, Dharmapuri, Krishnagiri, Vellore, Thiruvannamalai, and Villupuram today (Saturday, 17th July).

As regards the Chennai Metro City, it will remain generally cloudy. There are prospects for mild rain in 1 or 2 places in the city.

Generally, during the southwest monsoon season in Tamil Nadu, (from 1st June to 17th July), the average expected rainfall in Tamil Nadu is 91.8 mm. However, until now during this period, there has been a rainfall of 125.4 mm. This is 37% higher than the average.

As at 8.30 AM on Friday morning (18th July), the rainfall recorded in mm in various places: Nilgiri District Devala and Pandalur - 90, Coimbatore District Valparai Talshildar Office, Chinnakkallar, Nilgiri District Avalanchi - 70, Nilgiri District Koodalurbazaar, Coimbatore district Valparai, Solaiyaru - 50, Nilgiri District Melbhavani, Coimbatore District Cinchona - 40 mm, Nilgiri District Naduvattm, Emerald, Krishnagiri DistrictNedungal - 30 mm.”

Warning for Fishermen

High-speed winds at 40 kmph to 50 kmph may blow in the North Arabian Sea, the coastal areas of Gujarat and Maharashtra States, coastal areas of the states of Kerala and Karnataka,  and the adjacent southeast and central-east Arabian sea, So, it has been advised that the fishermen must refrain from venturing into the sea in these areas. Further, the fishermen in the areas southwest and the central-west Arabian Sea have also been warned NOT to venture into the sea from 18th July till 22nd July.
