All the market areas in Chennai to be monitored by 32 teams

For the purpose of enforcing social distancing to control the spread of COVID infection, all the market areas belonging to 16 taluks of Chennai would be monitored by 32 teams formed by GCC along with the district administration.
The teams of Revenue officials would keep a close eye on all the violations pertaining to COVID infection containment. Truth is if the markets violate Covid-19 norms, then a decision to close trading for 3 months would be taken.
The officials have been directed by the Chennai Corporation commissioner Mr. G. Prakash to regulate the markets in Chennai. At these market areas, large numbers of Coronavirus infection cases were traced. Controlling the crowds at the markets has been a challenge for the GCC even after shifting most of the 81 markets.
It was brought to light by some civic body workers from 200 wards in Chennai that the contacts of the Coronavirus infection have been traced to 81 markets and commercial neighbourhoods.
For the sake of creating awareness regarding the control of Coronavirus, a meeting would be held this week with the trader associations. This was as per Mr. Meghanatha Reddy, Chennai Corporation deputy commissioner (Revenue and Finance).
The lockdown has resulted in the 70% decrease in the sales in Chennai. This was according to Mr. A. Vikramaraja, president of Tamil Nadu Vanigar Sangangalin Kootamaippu.
During the pandemic, the people had low purchasing capacity and due to this reason the essential commodities trade also resulted in a dip of 30 percent. It must be taken into account that the sales have decreased due to the closure of the shops by 6pm as per the orders from TN government and the corporation.
As per an official of Chennai Corporation, every day, each of the 200 wards have reported atleast 10 violations and it increased the risk of spread of Coronavirus infection.
