Increase in capitation fee

Posted on: 15/May/2013 12:25:10 PM
Capitation fees in engineering colleges have increased considerably this year. A seat’s donation costs as much as Rs.7 lakhs. The average fee is Rs. 3 lakhs.

‘I had scored 150 cut-off marks and aspired to join ECE through management quota, as (I) had no chance to get this course in a second level college. I approached one of the reputed second level engineering colleges in the city which demanded Rs 4 lakh for ECE.  I paid Rs 50,000 as advance before exam results were released but now the college wants Rs 7 lakh’, says one student.

A parent says, ‘I don’t know what yardstick colleges follow for fixing the capitation fee. It differs every year. Some parents whom I met at the college are ready to sacrifice their life’s earning for a seat. Such is the pressure from their children.’

But according to colleges administrations, they have to take the donation to maintain the institution’s standards. ‘With the meagre fees they collect from students it will be difficult for them to run institution and banks too turn blind eye when colleges approach them for loans. With no option left we are forced to collect donation but we show it in our accounts. It is   invested for infrastructure development. How can you term it illegal?’ says an official.
