Rain cools temperatures

As a result of the light shower on Sunday night and early Monday morning, Nungambakkam received 3.6 mm of rain, Meenambakkam 50.6 mm and Avadi 67 mm of rain. The temperatures dropped and gave Chennaiites respite from the sweltering heat. Maximum temperature on Sunday was 39.6 degrees Celsius and 35.7 degrees Celsius on Monday.
‘The clouding is attributed to Cyclone Mahasen. The system is now around 600km east of Chennai. We are at the periphery of the system and these are welcome effects. There are no rain clouds over Chennai as of now. The system is at its nearest point – almost the same latitude as Chennai. From Monday night, it will start moving away from Chennai… We may again receive some rain on Tuesday. After that, the temperature will continue to rise… The Met department expects a maximum temperature of 36 C on Tuesday’, said Director of Chennai Meteorological Department Y.E.A. Raj.
