This fruit market at Madhavaram is over crowded with NO social distancing

At the moffussil bus stand in Madhavaram, there is a temporary fruit market. This market is grabbing the attention now for wrong reasons.

With traders encroaching the open spaces and visitors not following social distancing, this fruit market is now exactly similar to Koyambedu market. Three weeks back, Koyambedu Wholesale Market Complex or KWMC had Corona virus infection clusters and then this temporary market was set up at Madhavaram.

Beginning from 1st May 2020, this market at Madhavaram started functioning between 10 am to 6 pm. There are as many as 230 shops of different sizes here. Everyday more than 200 vehicles each carrying minimum of 5 tonnes of fruits enters the market. From across many places belonging to Chennai city and suburbs, customers bring 650 two wheelers and mini trucks is known.

It was brought to light that customers as well as the traders walked closed to each other without social distancing and many did not use face masks. Important information collected is traders have encroach the space left open for the free movement of the public with the piling up of empty fruit boxes. In the space available, vehicles that enter this market with produce get parked in haphazard manner.

It was pointed out by a resident of Red hills that this market was overcrowded because it attracts many customers. He added that the social distancing is the need of the hour and it must be strictly followed. Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority or CMDA is responsible for the markets maintenance.

As per Mr. Karthikeyan, member secretary of CMDA it was clear that fines were collected from those who do not wear face masks and from the shopkeepers who do not follow social distancing. He revealed that the field officers were dong superb work and help of additional police has been sought.
