Steep drop in Physics centums this year

Posted on: 10/May/2013 4:17:51 PM
The number of students who scored full marks in the Std. 12 Physics paper has come down drastically in the past few years. This year it was a mere 36 while it was 142 in 2012 and 646 in 2011. Teachers attribute the drop to a ‘twist’ in the questions.

‘The questions themselves were not difficult. It is just that the same textbook questions were asked. But the numbers in the problems had been changed’, said a teacher. ‘This “twist” meant a vast number of students got these questions wrong, and that there were a large number of students scoring between 196 and 199.

‘The fact is that the exam code has changed in Physics and has been cracked in Computer Science. When you know the questions you are likely to get, your centums will rise. And when the exam code changes and you don’t know what questions you are going to get, then your
centums will fall. This is symptomatic of the fact that our educational system is more tuned to training people for examinations rather than making students understand the subject. This exam system needs to change and become more open’, said another teacher.
