More than 11000 people are homeless in Chennai according to the Corporation. If the extended city (which includes Tiruvallur and Kanchipuram) are accounted for, the number comes up to 15,000.

According to sources at the Tamil nadu Slum Clearance Board, most of the homeless families live around NSC Bose Road. They are almost all daily wage labourers who cannot afford rent.

‘Until three months ago, I lived in rented accommodation in Kallarai near Central, paying a monthly rent of Rs. 3,000. When I found it difficult to continue paying rent, I moved out and started living on the streets’, said a women who now lives on Mint Street. ‘(I) earn Rs. 100 a day making flower garlands. (My) husband is a daily wage labourer. I am ready to live wherever the government allots us a house.’

‘(My) family was shifted to civic body-run schools during the rains. I do not enjoy the benefits of the government’s welfare schemes… We have apportioned the space on the pavement. Every night, we wait for the shops to shut before retiring for the night on the pavement outside’, says another woman.
