Chennai is also home for Bengalis

Posted on: 06/May/2013 4:14:10 PM
Chennai has its fair share of people of origins other than Tamil Nadu. Bengalis consist of a sizable number of the city’s population. Many Bengalis say that even though Chennai and its language were alien to them when they came here first, the city and its people have grown on them and it is now home.

‘I have lived in Chennai from my childhood and all my friends are Tamilians. But it’s just fascinating how I have never felt out of place in a group of South Indians though I am a pure Bengali. They treat me the same way as other fellow mates.

Though I have a little problem with the language, I can still manage while talking to the auto drivers and shopkeepers. The 18 years in Chennai have never been difficult may be because I never wanted or had a reason to leave Chennai. I love this place for the people, and the city as such is so big and not congested like other cities’, says one person.

‘I accompanied my husband after he got a posting here. Initially, it was difficult for me. I didn`t know anyone. But later I made friends at some common places like the fish market and then association meetings. But, my son is a complete Tamilian, he loves curd rice’, says another.
