The Coastal Guard Commission has given the approval to set up a separate path for the differently-abled persons in the Marina Beach.

Greater Chennai Corporation took the decision to set up this separate route for the differently-abled people with the objective that the beach should be accessible and enjoyed by all kinds of people!

Accordingly, an application was submitted to the State Regional Coast Guard to set up a separate path for the differently-abled persons to enter the beach area of sand and play in the waves.

The State Coastal Guard Commission gave approval for setting up this path at the Besant Nagar beach. It has also sent a recommendation letter to the Central Coast Guard Commission to set up this separate path to the Marina Beach as well. This appeal was reviewed by the Central Coast Guard Commission and now, approval has been obtained to set up these 2 separate paths for the differently-abled in 2 beaches in Chennai Marina and Besant Nagar! In Marina Beach, this path will be set up near the Gandhi statue and the statue of Labour.

The path will be of 380 metres length and 3 metres width behind the statue of Labour. It will be of 125 metres length and 3 metres width behind the Gandhi statue.

The Commission has emphasised that the path should NOT be of concrete, but should be wooden.

Accordingly, the activities of setting up this path have commenced at a cost of Rs. 90 Lakhs.

It may be recalled that on the World Differently-abled Day last year, the differently-abled children were taken on a special 3-wheeler chair to the beach shore and were allowed to enjoy playing in the seashore.

4 special wheeled-chairs have been procured by the Greater Chennai Corporation at a cost of Rs. 8.8 Lakhs under the ‘Sudesh Darshan’ scheme!
