Women driving autorickshaws in Chennai are few in numbers and soon this would increase.
On Friday, Rotary International District 3232 through Pink Auto project distributed 3 wheeler driving licenses to 200 women.
It must be noted that Mr. Ravi, ADGP (special wing for crimes against women and children) urged the 200 women to become MPV or Mahila Police Volunteers. To fight crimes against women, MPV would act as a bridge between police and public.
In future, there might be some award given to the women auto drivers to motivate them to follow the traffic rules. The ADGP wanted the rotary club to come up with the award.
Phase-1 of Pink Auto project was started with the objective of creating self employment opportunities for women by providing them training with the help of driving schools. Point is the Rotary members would fund these schools fully. There are many women in the poorer sections of society and it is now said that this project aims to empower these women.
Till now, 3 pink autos have been distributed to women drivers and the project has an outlay of Rs 2.5 crores. Savera Hotel chairman, Nina Reddy had funded these autorickshaws for the women.
