Akshaya Tritiya falls on 13th May this year. Also known as Akha Teej, the day falls on the third date of the waning moon in the Indian month of Vaishaka. This festival is celebrated by Hindus and Jains around the world.
Legends say that this is the day Lord Ganesha began to write the Mahabharata while sage Veda Vyasa dictated it. It is also the birth day of Parushurama, the sixth incarnation of Lord Vishnu. The day is a very auspicious one Akshaya means infinite or never diminishing. It is believed that if one is blessed if he or she does charity on this day.
It is unfortunate that jewelers in India have turned this day into a marketing gimmick by making people believe that it is auspicious to buy gold on this day.
