Health workers of GCC to play their part in identifying illegal sewage outfalls

Presently, the health workers belonging to the Greater Chennai Corporation or GCC are very busy in mosquito eradication work. To stop the breeding of malaria causing mosquitoes, the health workers are spraying mosquito larvicidal oil or MLO.
Soon, these health workers would be involved in an important activity. It is brought out that these workers would contribute to assimilation of data spread that would help the storm water drain or SWD department to identify illegal sewage outfalls.
It has been pointed out by some senior officials that in most of the locations in Chennai the health workers have found that mosquito breeding were concentrated in some pockets of the drains helping breeding. There is negligible rain now and mosquito breeding is happening at this point of time. This has shown clearly that water stagnation now has been due to of illegal sewage that has been let out in the drains.
The number of residential and commercial establishments that have not got sewer connections letting out waste matters into the nearest SWD outlet has increased and this has been mentioned by the engineers of the civic body.
The corporation engineers would get accurate data on the areas where illegal practices take place and that would be because the field work by health workers as it would be documented in the vector control monitoring system. There have been few interdepartmental meetings held to discuss about the above said aspect.
Point to be noted here is Chennai Corporation�s anti-mosquito drive has been focused on the water bodies like Cooum, Adyar and water canals. The city of Chennai has got 234 km long waterways whereas storm water drain network has got total length of around 1800 km is known.
Earlier, it was said that dedicated staffs involved in the de-silting works would also monitor the mosquito breeding spots. Now, the de-silting works is being done by contractors.
