Greater Chennai Corporation Commissioner Prakash has announced that the volunteers or agencies who have been offering food to street dogs in areas under the jurisdiction of the Greater Chennai Corporation MUST register their details through e-mail before 15th January.
A notification in this regard mentions:
Under the Greater Chennai Corporation, activities have been initiated to reduce the proliferation of street dogs, birth-control operations are done and also, vaccination for preventing Rabies (dog-bite) and have been progressing excellently well.
Complaints are received regarding the volunteers and goodwill agencies who provide food for the street dogs in the residential areas and public places.
In order to reduce any issues between the above volunteers/agencies and the public and also to improve the lifestyle of the dogs, Greater Chennai Corporation has decided to seek the support and cooperation of these volunteers and agencies with the guidance from the Indian Animal Welfare Board.
Further, the services of these volunteers and agencies would be availed to identify the dogs with skin diseases and the dogs which have not been operated (birth control) and to encourage adoption of the street dogs.
So, as per the above project following the guidelines of the Indian Animal Welfare Board, the volunteers/agencies are requested to furnish their personal details by e-mail to the e-mail address:
[email protected]. which would enable the Greater Chennai Corporation personnel to get in touch with them to utilize their services as explained above.
Further, Greater Chennai Corporation has set the target of �Chennai Metro City without wild-dog-bites and rabies�.
Accordingly, various activities such as vaccination against rabies on behalf of the General Health Department and the Veterinary Department, and also the project to eradicate the internal and external parasite problems are being planned to be executed zone-wise monitored by the Zonal Officer, Zonal Welfare Officer, and the Assistant Veterinary doctor.
Sao far, anti-rabies vaccination and internal/external parasitic injection has been administered on dogs in various locations as under:
Madhavaram - 8846, Alandur - 3,474, Ambattur - 8,243, Sholinganallur - 4,461, Valasarawakkam - 5,869, Anna Nagar - 3,346, Adyar - 4,186, Manali - 3,551, Perungudi - 4,598, Thiru. Vi. Ka. Nagar - 3,835, Royapuram - 2,759, Tondiarpet - 5,302, and Teynampet - 3,706 for a total of 62,266 dogs.
Under this project, the public has volunteered themselves and administstered the above treatment for their 3,221 pet dogs.
Even as this project is being executed, awareness is being given to the pubic regarding rabies.
