Small bus services to Iyyappanthangal in Chennai stopped by MTC

Posted on: 30/Dec/2019 9:39:50 AM
Along the S23 route, MTC used to operate around 20 trips scheduled between Iyyappanthangal and Kumananchavadi on Mount-Poonamallee Road and for every 20 minutes, an MTC bus departed from Iyyappanthangal carrying the commuters. The commuters were taken through Arvind Eye Hospital, 2 marriage halls, temples and local government school etc.

The latest news is complaints were received from the residents belonging to Iyyappanthangal about the stopping of small bus services by MTC.

It was later pointed out by Mr Senthil Kumar, local resident’s welfare association that in the beginning of 2019 MTC had cut down the frequency of S23 bus service and this had led to issues for many passengers as they have to wait for 40 minutes to get a small bus. He expressed his unhappiness about the bus service that has been stopped now.

The point is this situation has been exploited by many autos and they have been demanding double the amount now from the people. A resident belonging to Subbiah Nagar mentioned that people were forced to pay Rs 70 to Rs 100 for a distance for just 2 km as no share autos ply on the interior roads. It must be taken into account that the bus services had to be downgraded because the patronage along this route had reduced ever since the corporation started small bus services.

According to some official of MTC, from the last month, the situation became worse and MTC operated trips for just 3 or 4 passengers. Hence the frequency along the route was reduced. It is important to mention that the route was not scrapped and services could be resumed.

From Rs 1800 per day in the year 2018, the daily collection has come down to Rs 1200 now and this barely covered the salaries of the drivers and conductors. This was according to an official of MTC.

MTC has kept the regular passengers in a confused state regarding the schedule of the small buses. There have been many complaints about the deficiency in the service of small buses and these complaints have been increasing. Important point is neither the official website nor the government order mentioned about small buses fares structure.

The superb piece of information is MTC would be setting up a new website and this website would provide information about all types of MTC bus services, routes, schedules, fares etc. Designing of mobile app for making the commuters know about the nearest bus stops has been going on.
