Light rains in January 2020 in Chennai

Posted on: 26/Dec/2019 9:43:18 AM
The North-East monsoon this time would be extending to January and due to this reason, there would be light rains in the coastal districts in the month of January. This has been confirmed by Mr N. Puviarasan, director, Area Cyclone Warning Centre, RMC, Chennai.

In another few days, New Year would be coming and it is now said that the Chennai residents would ring in the New Year carrying umbrellas. The important point is the weather bloggers have also predicted rains in Chennai in the month of January.

Chennai based weather blogger, Mr Pradeep John, revealed that there would be some light rains in the New Year in the places like Kancheepuram, Tiruvallur and Chennai etc. In the first week of January also there would be rains.

The flow of easterlies generally starts declining by December and it is now said that Chennai and other neighbouring places might get rains in January due to the flow of easterlies. It must be noted that it is normal for the monsoons to extend beyond December. Important piece of information is southwest monsoon that was supposed to withdraw in the month of September ended in the middle of October month only.

Normally, the southwest monsoon withdrawal takes place over a month and this time the withdrawal was fast. North-East monsoon started within just a few days of withdrawal of southwest monsoons by 16th of October.  It is important to note that the rain forecast in January might not make up for the rain deficit of Chennai.

Chennai has recorded 613.3 mm of rains till Wednesday so far in this monsoon season. This has been against an average of 740.4 mm with a deficit of 17%. It was pointed out by an IMD official that the January rains might bring down the deficit by one or two % points and it could be for 4 or 5 days.

The sky condition is likely to be generally cloudy and light rains are likely to occur in some places. This was as per the IMD forecast for the next 48 hours. The maximum temperature and the minimum temperatures are likely to be around 30 degrees Celsius and 25 degrees Celsius respectively. It must not be forgotten that IMD had predicted light rains for the last 2 days but Chennai city had only trace (around 2 mm of rains). Till this year-end, these conditions are likely to continue.

For the next 2 days, a cyclonic circulation in the Comorin region extending up to southern TN could bring moderate rains in southern districts and isolated rains in the northern districts. This was as per Mr Mahesh Palawat of Skymet Weather. He mentioned that the chances of rains around New Year are slim.
