GCC is taking efforts to help the inmates of the shelter homes to get jobs

Posted on: 20/Dec/2019 10:02:06 AM
To help the inmates of the shelter homes to find jobs, GCC is now involved in developing a website for its Wing of Homeless Shelters.

It is worth mentioning here that GCC would display details about the types of shelters (male, female, child, transgender) and link of their location, success stories of reunions with family and awareness videos.

As per a senior official at the Wing of Homeless Shelters, the shelters have many unemployed inmates who have completed their graduation and some even their post-graduation. He highlighted that most of them completed their studies in their respective towns and came to Chennai for jobs.

Point is they stayed on the roads as they couldnt find a suitable job. From the roads, these jobless persons were picked and sent to the shelters. He added that the issue of finding a job is being addressed now. Profiles of the prospective job applicants plus their photographs would be displayed on the website.

The important piece of information is the website would not only be useful for those who have completed graduation but also for those who are on the lookout for some skill-based jobs. It must be taken into account that there are people looking out for the jobs of drivers, cooks, house help, etc and the website would also have information about these jobs too.

It is superb to note that the website would also have a list of all shelter homes, their addresses, and their Google location, etc. There would also be some awareness videos available on the website and these videos would provide information about the steps that need to be taken if one comes across a homeless person on the road. The website would also be used to get CSR funds and this was confirmed by an official. Point to be noted is presently every shelter receives an amount of Rs 10 lakhs as funds for a year of operation and for the maintenance.

It is now brought out that the funds currently are being used to provide food, blankets, mats, pillows, medicines, etc and once the fund amount gets increased then the shelter homes would be upgraded with televisions, cots and CCTV`s, etc.

There are as many as 38 shelters currently available for the homeless persons in Chennai and these are run by NGOs under the purview of the civic body. It must be taken into account that another 33 shelters are under construction.
