The shocking information is the prices of onions in the neighborhood shops have touched Rs 140 per kilogram now. It must be noted that online prices went up to Rs 190 per kg.

The prices of onions would go further up in the week and might not come down till the middle of the month of January 2020. This was brought out by some onion traders.

Against the usual 70 truckloads, just 30 truckloads of onions were received at the Koyambedu market and each truck had up to 20 tonnes of onions.

It was revealed by onion wholesale dealer at Koyambedu market that not all were of good quality and there were some onions that were damaged also. He spoke about how onions received had shelf life of less than 2 days. It must be taken into account that those onions that were of lesser shelf life were sold for Rs 80 per kg by the retailers at Koyambedu market complex. Information collected is the vendors inform the people about the shelf life of the onions.

By 6 am, the wholesale price of the premium onions have touched Rs 130 per kg and the retail vendors mentioned about how they would price the onions at Rs 145 to Rs 150 per kg. It is known that Chennai depends on states like AP, Maharashtra and Karnataka for onions.

As per Mr. Chandru, president of Koyambedu Vegetable Market Association, the farmers and dealers of onions of these states have mentioned about how the prices of onions would not come down till the mid January.
