Posted on: 03/Dec/2019 9:41:36 AM
It has been mentioned by the meteorological department that southern TN would continue to get rainfall for another 2 days while rains would ease in northern parts of TN.

It must be taken into account that heavy rains over the weekend has wiped out the deficit for the season. Information collected is TN has received about 40 cm of rainfall till now and this was high when compared to the seasonal share of 36 cm rains (excess of 11 percent). The officials have now said that TN needs just 4 percent to reach its average for the NE season.

Rainfall of 18 cm was received by Mettupalayam in Coimbatore district and this was the highest rainfall recorded in TN for a day in the last 24 hours that ended at 8:30 am on Monday. Rainfall of 13 cm was recorded in Coonoor of Nilgiris and Palaviduthi belonging to Karur district.

For the next few days, a trough in easterlies that runs from southwest Bay of Bengal off Sri Lanka coast to the south TN coast would influence rains. Good easterly flow was also influenced by the low pressure area over Lakshadweep and by the adjoining southeast Arabian Sea. This was favourable for the wet weather in TN. This was as per Mr. S. Balachandran, deputy director general of meteorology. He hinted that present rain spells would continue and the intensity would vary for different regions.

He revealed that southern parts of TN would get scattered rainfall and the intensity of rains in northern parts of TN would be less. In one or two places on Tuesday, there are chances of heavy rains.  Important point to be noted is the weather stations belonging to Nungambakkam and Meenambakkam recorded 4cm and 6cm rains respectively.

It is now said that till Wednesday, Chennai would receive light to moderate rains. The downpour during the weekend made the otherwise dry November wet and in Chennai district the weekend rains have brought down the seasonal deficit from 30% to just 8% now.

Point is Chennai city got 56 cm of rain against its average of 61 cms so far from 1st of October. In the past three days, nearly 107 minor as well as major tanks of Chengalpattu and Kancheepuram districts have reached their maximum capacity.

It must be noted that tanks present in places like Navalur, Guduvancheri,Mambakkam, Potheri, Tambaram, Peria Eri, Sembakkam, Nanmangalam,Perungalathur, Oragadam, Selaiyur and Keelkattalai got filled up
